For Netflix, Matt Owens and Steven Maeda created the fantasy adventure television series One Piece. The show is a live-action adaptation of the same-named manga series by Eiichiro Oda, who also worked as a significant creative consultant for the production. It is made by Shueisha, which also publishes the manga, and Kaji Productions. Iaki Godoy, Emily Rudd, Mackenyu, Jacob Romero Gibson, and Taz Skylar are featured in the series as members of the Straw Hat Pirates.

When the show debuted on August 31, 2023, both critics and viewers gave it high marks for the performances, screenplay, special effects, and overall adherence to the source material. In comparison to Netflix’s earlier tries, such as Death Note and Cowboy Bebop, both of which received largely unfavorable reviews from reviewers and viewers, it has been hailed as one of the best live-action adaptations of a manga or anime series. Netflix picked up the show for a second season, which is currently in production, two weeks after its debut.

As they journey through perilous seas, hostile places, and beyond in search of the “One Piece,” a legendary treasure that will elevate their captain, Monkey D. Luffy, to the title of “King of the Pirates,” the Straw Hat Pirates, their experiences are chronicled in the series. But other crews are also looking for the One Piece, and the Marines are hot on their ship’s heels. The Straw Hats are prepared for the voyage and even more prepared to battle for their dreams collectively because they are equipped with abilities and an unshakable bond.

Episode 1:”Romance Dawn”

After notorious pirate captain Gold Roger is put to death, pirates head to sea in pursuit of his latent loot, the “One Piece.” Monkey D. Luffy, a rookie pirate, is one of many looking for the riches 22 years later. He ends up aboard the vicious Alvida’s pirate ship. He fights Alvida and flees with her abused cabin guy Koby using the elasticity abilities he gained by inadvertently eating a Devil Fruit. To get a chart of the Grand Line, a perilous marine path where the One Piece is allegedly hidden, the two travel to a Marine base. Roronoa Zoro, a legendary pirate hunter who was imprisoned after defeating Helmeppo, the son of a dishonest Marine captain Morgan, is set free by Luffy. Cat burglar Nami assists Luffy in his theft.

Episode 2:”The Man in the Straw Hat”

Buggy the Clown, a pirate who has held the residents of Orange Town captive in his own circus, kidnaps Luffy, Zoro, and Nami. Before being captured, Luffy swallows the map and discovers Buggy’s connections to Shanks, his childhood hero from whom he promised to rule the pirates and who gave him his straw hat. Buggy tries to drown Luffy in a tank of seawater, but encouraged by his positivity, Zoro and Nami flee and save him. While Luffy launches Buggy away, rescuing the town, his body parts are kept in crates thanks to his Chop-Chop Fruit superpowers. When Koby meets with Garp, he learns that before enlisting in the Marines, he was with pirates, according to Garp. Koby is allowed to stay by Garp because of his integrity, and Morgan is disciplined for lying about the base attack. Nami makes contact with someone while sailing away to let them know she has the map. Throughout the episode, many flashbacks of Luffy’s early life are depicted, including his time with Shanks and his pirate crew, eating the “Gum-Gum” Devil Fruit, and Shanks rescuing him from a sea creature while employing an enigmatic power that cost him his left arm.

Episode 3:”Tell No Tales”

The newly renamed Straw Hat Crew stop by the Gecko Islands in Syrup Village to see if they can get a bigger boat because they need one. Usopp, a boisterous young man who frequently claims that pirates are approaching daily, works at the shipyard and learns about Luffy and his crew’s need for a boat. Knowing the owner, a sickly wealthy girl named Kaya, he brings them to meet with her to discuss the possibility of her selling them a ship. Usopp and Kaya are close friends despite Usopp’s cunning methods, however Zoro has his doubts about Kaya’s butler Klahadore. On the other hand, Garp likes Koby and makes him question his commitment to the Marines and himself.As soon as they learn where Luffy is, Garp requests that Koby take the lead. Buggy is captured and threatened by the fisherman Pirate Arlong at the same time, which persuades him to pursue Luffy instead. Due to their shared acquaintance with Usopp’s father Yasopp, Luffy and Usopp become close friends. Nami and Kaya meet and talk about their individual perspectives on one another. After killing Merry, Kaya’s attorney, Klahadore is revealed to be Kuro of the Black Cat pirates. Usopp flees to find assistance while Zoro gets knocked out as they are confronted. Except for Koby, who has arrived with the Marines, nobody believes his cries.

Episode 4: “The Pirates Are Coming”

After being thrown into a well by Kuro’s henchmen Sham and Buchi, Zoro reflects about his youth and the passing of his buddy Kuina, who gave him the desire to become a swordsman. Usopp invites Koby and the Marines to the residence to ask for assistance, but Kuro tries to talk them out of it while also delivering an unconscious Luffy who had consumed poisoned soup intended for Kaya. When Kuro begins attacking Kaya so that he might inherit her shipyards, Kaya struggles to believe that Merry is dead and that Klahadore is actually Kuro. Usopp and Nami rush to her rescue.After Zoro saves Luffy from the Marines, the two fight their way back to the house—Zoro facing off against Sham and Buchi, while Luffy faces off against Kuro. Kuro leaving the island grants the Straw Hats victory, and Kaya presents them with a recently constructed ship that Luffy names the Going Merry. Usopp is welcomed to the crew and given the opportunity to express his affections to Kaya, who is now aspiring to become a doctor. Garp tells Koby that he was able to pull them out despite his failure to capture Luffy. Garp starts attacking their ship as the Straw Hats continue their journey, and Luffy reveals that Garp is his grandfather.

Episode 5: “Eat at Baratie!”

The Straw Hats escape through a fog as Luffy successfully dissuades the Marines by deflecting one of their cannon balls back at their mast. The gang arrives at a floating restaurant named Baratie as they inquire about Luffy’s relationship to Garp’s family. Here, they meet Sanji, a chef and waiter who is passionate about cuisine. Owner Zeff makes Luffy work as a dishwasher to pay for his meals when he is unable to pay the bill. Warlord Dracule Mihawk is hired by Garp to bring Luffy in alive. When Helmeppo hears Koby overhearing, he tells him about the Seven Warlords of the Sea, who, when they need to get their hands dirty, have covert ties to the government. When Zeff refuses to let Sanji cook, Luffy stands up for him. When Mihawk comes to take Luffy in, Zoro challenges him to a sword combat in order to demonstrate why he is the best. Nami considers leaving, but she decides against it in order to stand by her friend. Mihawk witnesses Luffy and Zoro’s resolve and decides not to kill Zoro after Zoro suffers a brutal defeat. After the battle, Zoro loses consciousness.

Episode 6: “The Chef and the Chore Boy”

Although Luffy is doubtful if Zoro will survive, he has Zeff tend to his wounds. In an effort to keep him connected to life, Nami is persuaded to communicate with him and admits to alienating people. Sanji shares with Luffy and Usopp his relationship with Zeff’s past and his desire to discover All Blue, a region of the sea where all fish live. Through Mihawk, Koby hears of Garp and Luffy’s relationship, and after persuading Garp that Luffy won’t change, he decides to lead the Marines in capturing Luffy.. After taking captive Buggy’s head to locate Luffy (he hid his ear in Luffy’s hat), Arlong unexpectedly shows up to Baratie with his crewmates Chew and Kuroobi. After giving him the Grand Line map and admitting that she is a member of Arlong’s crew, Nami leaves after brutally beating Luffy. Until Zoro awakens and persuades them to pursue Nami, Luffy feels like a failure as a captain. Sanji is persuaded to leave by Zeff, and he formally joins the Straw Hats. Luffy explains that he stole Buggy’s head as Zoro and Usopp wonder how to locate Arlong.

Episode 7:”The Girl with the Sawfish Tattoo”

When Luffy and his crew reach Conomi Island, they discover that Arlong and his pirates are in charge of Coco Village all the time. They find Nojiko, Nami’s adoptive sister, who tells them that Arlong is to blame for the two of them losing their adoptive mother. Garp, who has since arrived in Baratie, confronts Zeff regarding Luffy’s whereabouts and declares that he does not want to lose his grandchild in the same way that Gold Roger did. A bartender lets them know where Luffy is while Koby tells Helmeppo the truth about Garp’s relationship to Luffy.Arlong declares his intention to wipe out all humanity once it is discovered that he was buying Marine Captain Nezumi’s silence about their misdeeds. To pay off Arlong and save Coco Village, Nami is seen to have gathered 100 million berries. To Nami’s horror, Arlong instructs Nezumi to seize the cash, nevertheless. Luffy promises to assist Nami when she asks him for assistance since she is frustrated and at her wits’ end. Sanji, Usopp, Zoro, and Luffy become aware that Arlong is currently invading Coco Village.

Episode 8:”Worst in the East”

As Arlong and his Fishmen Pirates battle the Straw Hat Crew at Arlong Park, the residents of Coco Village decide to band together. As Luffy approaches Arlong in his tower, the battle rages, with the Straw Hats dispatching several fishmen with relative ease. When the combat starts to wane, Luffy learns that the tower holds a significant portion of Nami’s work, which is essential to Arlong, and he uses that realization to beat the fishman by bringing down the entire tower on him. Just as Garp and the Marines are about to arrive, the Straw Hats celebrate their win. The Straw Hats are about to be brought in, but Luffy won’t comply. Garp and Luffy engage in combat, with the former winning the conflict. Even though this, Luffy is passionate about pursuing his ambition, and in the end, Garp caves and instructs his Marines to find the remainder of Arlong’s crew. Nezumi finally posts a wanted poster for Luffy with a 30 million berry bounty as retaliation for his humiliation. Koby and Luffy bid each other farewell. Koby and Helmeppo are later told by Garp that he would personally teach them to become better soldiers. Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp, and Sanji reveal their intentions to form the Straw Hat Pirates when their old friends view Luffy’s wanted poster. Another Marine captain who is smoking cigars notices Luffy’s wanted poster and burns it with his cigarettes.
