Kim’s mother advised him to take acting classes in order to overcome his introverted nature when he was in school. He performed in a few plays before making his TV debut in the family sitcom Kimchi Cheese Smile in 2007. He went on to become well-known for his leading parts in the box office hits The Thieves (2012) and Secretly, Greatly (2013), as well as the television dramas Dream High (2011) and Moon Embracing the Sun (2012). He was awarded the Baeksang Arts Award for Best Actor in Television for his role as King Lee Hwon in Moon Embracing the Sun.
